Exporting your data

Export data makes one encrypted file holding the data on your phone that you choose, opened with six single-use words. You can read that file on your phone or on a computer.

Parts still awaiting a decision are marked with square brackets, [like this].

What is exported

#

In Export contents, tick the parts you want:

  • Moments
  • Updates: your own updates
  • Messages: without locked conversations and view-once photos
  • Connections and notes: your connections, with your notes
  • Settings: region, display, notifications, pause

Include photos adds the photos on your phone from the chosen parts. Files and videos over 100 MB are not included, because they are too large for an export file. Your PIN, travel mode’s six words, keys, and tokens are never exported. An export only holds the data on your phone, not the data on the server.

Making an export file

#
  1. In the menu, open Settings, then Export data in the Display and data section.
  2. Tick the parts to export, or press Select all. Turn on Include photos if you want.
  3. Press Create export file. Your phone seals the file.
  4. Write down the Six opening words that appear. They are not stored and are not shown again.
  5. Save the file where you choose. If you want to open it on a computer, press Also save its opener page.
  6. Press Done, hide the words.

The file and its six words

#
  • The file’s name only holds the date it was made, for example patepang-ekspor-20261107.ptpg.
  • Its content is entirely encrypted: without its six words, nobody can read it, including us. If the six words are lost, the file cannot be opened again.
  • Each export gets six new words, which are not travel mode’s six words.
  • Anyone holding the file together with its six words can read its content, so do not send the two together. Patepang never asks for them.

Opening the file

#

On a phone:

  1. In Export data, press Open export file, then Choose file.
  2. Type its six words.
  3. Its content is shown for reading only: it is not stored, not merged into your account, and it is gone as soon as you press Close file or Patepang locks.

On a computer, open the opener page you saved in a browser. That page is one HTML file that works without the internet and stores nothing. Choose the file, type the six words, then read its content. The page can also save the content as a JSON file; that copy is not encrypted. A file too large to open on a phone can be opened on a computer.

Save opener page in Export data saves that page at any time. [Where the opener page is published outside the app: awaiting a decision]

When export is not possible

#
  • While the emergency lock is on, export is frozen until the emergency lock ends.
  • During travel mode, export is hidden until travel mode’s six words are entered.
  • Once your account is deleted, the app can no longer make or open an export. A file you have already saved can still be opened with the opener page.

If you want to keep a copy before deleting your account, make an export first: see Deleting your account.
