Travel mode
Travel mode seals Patepang’s content on your phone with six words that only you write down, for example before going through an inspection or lending your phone. The PIN alone does not open it.
Turning it on
#- In the menu, choose Travel mode. It is also in Settings, under Locks and privacy.
- Press Turn on travel mode. Your phone makes six opening words.
- Write the six words down somewhere other than your phone. They are not stored and are not shown again.
- In Check your note, type the second and the fifth word from your note.
- Press Hide content now. Cancel discards the words without sealing anything.
What is sealed
#- The people you meet
- Updates
- Messages and photos on your phone
- Private notes
- Moments
The account keys and the tempel records kept by the app’s core are not sealed with the six words; both stay protected by your phone’s key. Files and videos over 100 MB are not sealed with the six words either: their content stays locked with your account key and is not shown during travel mode.
What someone inspecting your phone sees
#- Patepang with your account, your devices, and your settings, but without people, connections, conversations, messages, updates, moments, notes, groups, or rooms. The PIN alone only opens this stand-in.
- The app says that travel mode is on, so whoever inspects it can tell that some content is sealed.
- Patepang notifications on the screen are withdrawn when travel mode is turned on. During travel mode, every notification only says “Notice from Patepang.”
- Someone holding the unlocked phone can still count how many connections you have from the records of the app’s core: account ids, without names.
New messages are not opened during travel mode: they wait on the server, encrypted, until you open the content again.
Opening for a while and turning it off
#Type the six words in Six opening words, then choose:
- Open content for now: the content is visible until the app locks again, then it is sealed again.
- Turn off travel mode: the content is opened, the mode is turned off, and those words are not used again.
The six words
#- The six words are made on your phone from a list of 1024 everyday Indonesian words, shown once, and not stored anywhere.
- If the six words are lost, the sealed content cannot be opened again, by anyone, including us.
- Keep your note somewhere other than that phone. Patepang never asks for the six words, your PIN, or a key file: an email or a message asking for them is not from us.
- These words are not the six words of an export file, which are made new for each export.
