For the Patepang app, from PT Pakuan Teknologi Pangrango.
Parts still awaiting a decision are marked with square brackets, [like this].
- Day 0You schedule the deletionIn Settings, Delete account, then Schedule deletion.
- 7 daysThe grace periodUntil it ends you can cancel with Cancel deletion. Devices cannot be added or removed.
- Within the next hourThe server deletes everything connected to your accountAfter that, the account cannot be recovered.
- Usually within two hoursYour media files are gone
- Up to 40 daysEncrypted database backups expire
- 12 monthsThe closing record endsKept so that other people’s phones know the account has ended.
How to delete your account
#- In the Patepang app, open the menu, then choose Settings.
- Choose Delete account, the red row at the very bottom.
- Read what happens, then press Delete account and confirm with Schedule deletion.
Your account is deleted after a 7-day grace period. Until then you can cancel it with Cancel deletion on the same screen. During the grace period, devices cannot be added or removed. Once the grace period is over, the account cannot be recovered.
Before you delete
#- Save a copy, if you want: Export data makes an encrypted file with your moments, your updates, conversations, connections and notes, and settings. The file is opened with six words shown during the export.
- Stop your subscription in the store. A subscription in the App Store or Google Play does not stop by itself when the account is deleted.
- Choose group admins. In groups where you are the only admin, the member who joined earliest becomes admin after your account is deleted.
What is deleted
#Once the grace period is over, within the following hour, the server deletes everything connected to your account:
- devices and their notification tokens, one-time public keys, and messages not yet collected;
- delivery tokens, tempel records, and unfinished tempels;
- guardians (in both directions), backup key shares, and your account backup;
- group and event room memberships, and the rooms you opened;
- all the media you stored: its records on the server are deleted at once, and its files are deleted from a quarter of an hour after that hour ends, usually within two hours of the deletion;
- the subscription status on the server and the city on the birthplace waiting list;
- moderation cases about your account, along with their evidence;
- your account's key chain, except its closing entry.
The phones of people you have met know your account has ended; copies of messages and media on their phones remain. The app on your phone deletes its own keys and data as soon as the server states that the account no longer exists.
What remains, and for how long
#| What remains | How long |
|---|---|
| Closing record: account id, server region, deletion date, revocation entry | 12 months, so that other people's phones know the account has ended. |
| Key transparency log entries | Permanent, because the log only grows. The public part does not name the account; on the server, the entry still refers to the account id. |
| Encrypted database backups | Up to 40 days, then deleted along with the backup. |
| Audit logs and daily counts | With no time limit, without an account id. |
| The account-limit marker at Apple or Google for your phone | Kept by Apple or Google, and it remains after the app and your account are deleted. It only holds how many accounts that phone created in a month (Privacy policy section 4.11). |
| Cloudflare network logs | Under Cloudflare's own rules: [Cloudflare log retention: not yet confirmed] |
| Messages and media on other people's phones | On their phones, beyond our reach. |
| A subscription in the App Store or Google Play | Until you stop it in the store. |
If you no longer have the app
#- You saved a deletion code: open the Delete a Patepang account without the app page in a browser, then choose the code file. The account is deleted after a 7-day grace period, which can be cancelled from a phone or computer that still holds your account.
- Phone lost, but you have guardians: recover your account on a new phone through a tempel with two guardians, then delete the account from there. An account that has other devices can be deleted from those devices.
- No device, no guardians and no code: an inactive account is deleted automatically after 12 months. An account that has not been born is deleted after 30 days.
Patepang does not store your name, email address or phone number, so from an email we cannot be sure that a particular account is yours. That is why, without the app, an account can only be deleted early with a deletion code you made in the app beforehand. Blocked accounts
#An account blocked for a violation can only view its moderation status, appeal, and sign out, so it cannot request deletion from the app or with a deletion code. Such an account is deleted after 12 months of inactivity, or can be deleted as usual if its appeal is granted. [Right to deletion for blocked accounts: awaiting review by legal counsel]
