Your first tempel
A tempel is the only way to connect on Patepang: one phone shows a code, the other phone scans it, then the two of you shake both phones together. This guide explains the steps, what happens if it fails, and what both phones show afterwards.
Before you start
#- You both need Patepang with an account on your own phone. An account is created through Create account on the Welcome screen, with no email or phone number.
- A newly created account is born at its first tempel. If there is no tempel within 30 days of the account being created, the account is deleted.
- A tempel runs through the server, so both phones need to be connected to the internet.
- The phone that scans needs camera permission. The camera is only used to read the tempel code on the phone of the person in front of you; the image is not stored or sent. If you do not allow the camera, show your QR and let the person in front of you scan it.
About meeting people safely, read Safety.
Step by step
#- When you are face to face, you both open Tempel, the round button beside the tab bar at the bottom of the screen.
- One of you shows their code: the Tempel sheet opens on Your QR. The code changes by itself every 30 seconds.
- The other chooses Scan, allows the camera if asked, then points the frame at the code on the phone of the person in front of them.
- As soon as the code is read, both phones open Shake together and check each other. Follow the words on the screen: hold both phones pressed together, wait for the countdown, then shake both phones together for about two seconds.
- The shakes of the two phones are then matched. If they match, you are connected.
Who shows the code and who scans does not change the result. In the Tempel sheet, How to tempel plays the same steps.
If it fails
#If a tempel fails, both phones give the reason in one sentence. A tempel that fails does not become a connection, and you can try again right away.
- Shakes do not match
- The two phones did not shake at the same time. Hold them pressed together, then shake them together once more.
- Too still
- The shake was not felt. Shake both phones a little harder for two seconds.
- Code expired
- The code changes every 30 seconds. Scan the code currently shown.
- Time ran out
- The shake or its answer did not arrive in time. Do the tempel once more.
- Another tempel
- One of the phones is doing a tempel with someone else. Finish that first, then try again.
Press Try again. The phone that shows the code displays a new code; on the phone that scans, press Scan again, then scan the code currently shown.
After the shake fails twice, the sheet offers See assisted tempel with two other ways: someone else may hold both phones and shake them at once, or you connect through an event room. Nothing is recorded about the person who helps, on the server or on your phones. A connection made through an event room starts limited: only the name and the event card come through, until you do a tempel directly.
After the tempel
#Both phones show the same thing:
- You are connected. Until their nickname arrives, the person you just met is called “new person”. Their name arrives a moment later in an encrypted message from their phone, and your name reaches their phone the same way.
- If this is an account’s first tempel, that phone says Your account was born today.
- The moment of your meeting is already recorded on both phones. A photo together and a place name can be added, both optional; what you add is also seen by the person you met. Press Save, or Later.
- That person appears in the People tab, and you can message each other right away.
For one hour, the Tempel sheet also shows “Just did a tempel with …” with See moment and Write an update together.
What is recorded
#- The server records that your two accounts did a tempel, when, and in what way. So the server knows who has met whom. A tempel does not use your phone’s location, and the server cannot read your names or the content of your messages.
- The shake recording, 2 to 2.5 seconds of motion sensor data, is sealed on the phone for the tempel enclave, that is, an isolated environment whose code can be proven. The enclave compares the two recordings, discards them, then returns only its decision.
- The first messages after a tempel, at most 20 within 24 hours, use a token tied to that tempel, so the server knows those messages come from the person you did a tempel with.
- A moment’s content, including its photos and place name, is end-to-end encrypted: the server cannot read it.
The details are in the Privacy policy.
When you meet again
#With someone you are already connected to, the next meeting uses Tempel again, from their profile: one phone shows its QR, the other phone scans it, with no shake. The server checks that you have done a tempel before, then a new moment is recorded on both phones. Tempel again works only once an hour for the same pair.
Tempel again a day or more after your first direct tempel gives the second-meeting reward, once per pair: a free account gets an extra 500 MB of media space.
